QUARTY, Howard B., 1st Marine division , 1st Regiment , 3rd Battalion, Headquarters Company , 81 Millimeter Mortar Platoon. I was there during the invasion for 18 days. We were shot up so bad, we had no division left. They came and took us out of there, and brought us back to the Pavuvu to recuperate. After 2 days, we were in training to go to Okinawa. That was April 1st, 1945. We were there when the war ended, then sent home. For the last 50 some odd years, I still CANNOT sleep through the night without horrible nightmares. + QUEEN, James Junior, PFC. 81st Wildcat Div, US Army. PFC Queen was killed when he stepped on a land mine on 26 OCT 1944 in the Peleliu Central Combat Zone on the Palau Islands. * QUICK, Billy Lee. Navy Corpsman attached to a Marine unit during Peleliu. He was wounded along with three other men in a foxhole. Billy Lee died on July 17, 1981. He spoke little about this time in his life but it clearly had a profound effect on him and touched his family throughout his life. *QUIRAM, Harold W. Captain in 321st Infantry Division, Company H. Wounded at Anguar leading a charge into a Japanese stronghold. Received Purple Heart and Silver Star. Became occupation officer in Japan. Promoted to Major after WWII. Became commercial artist after war. Lived in Dallas, TX. Died in 1978 of cancer.

RALSTON, Robert L. - Pvt - D Co. Third Armored Amphibian Bn.

+ RAMBO, GEORGE T. PFC, First Signal Company, First Marine Division, landed on Peleliu D-Day, September 15, 1944. He suffered a very survivorable wound about September 20th. He was taken to the beach on a stretcher and was waiting for a boat to take him out to a hospital ship, when a Jap mortar shell struck him, killing him instantly. He was from Florida.

RENNER, Mathias J. Navy. Was on an Attack Transport and fought on Peleliu. He climbed a flag pole there and took the Japanese flag, which His family still has to this day, along with a Japanese sword. The flag Has dirt and blood on it as well as a bullet hole.

+ RHYNE, James Lee. Marine Corporal (TW) (EP). James was killed in action on October 3, 1944. He received a purple heart, Presidential Unit Citation ribbon bar with star, American Defense Service medal, Asiatic- Pacific Campaign medal, and World War II Victory Medal. * RICE, Browne B., Jr. USMC, Weapons Company, 7th Marines. He suffered a serious gunshot wound, and while being evacuated on a litter was shot a second time. Browne also fought with the 7th Marines at Guadalcanal and New Britain. He lives in Houston, Texas.

+ RICE, Lyman D. K-3-5. Killed in action on October 3, 1944.

RICHMOND, Harold T.A. Capt.05936. Commanding officer of G-2-5 on Peleliu. "Tom" was twenty-six-years-old at Peleliu and was awarded the Silver Star for heroism. He also received the Silver Star for heroism at Cape Gloucester. He died in a domestic plane crash in 1960. Tom was a Dartmouth graduate from Yonkers, New York. His son, Peter Richmond, wrote a book entitled My Father's War, New York: Simon & Schuster, 1996.

RICHEY, Henry L. 1st Marine Division, Co A, Tank Battalion. He went through the campaign without a scratch. He landed on Peleliu on September 15, 1944, five days after his 19th birthday. He was a Private at that time, later promoted to Cpl. On Okinawa he was a tank driver. The name of his tank was "Judy" - the only tank on Okinawa never to be knocked out overnight. The tank crew received a citation for evacuating wounded under fire. His son Henry writes, "I'm very proud of the part my father served in WW 2, as I am of ALL the men and women who gave the word "Freedom" a whole new meaning." Henry.Richey@worldnet.att.net

RIGONI, Albert J. - PFC - C Co. Third Armored Amphibian Bn.

RILEY, Morris "Mike", 1st Sergeant. 1st Marines 7th Regiment. He served Hg and Spl Wpns Cos. He was set to go to Iwo Jima with his outfit but they found him too ill with the malaria he got 4 years before at Guadalcanal and sent him back to the US for 6 months of R&R. He was at the Naval Powder Factory in Indianhead, MD with orders to ship out for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. He served the required 6 before out. Today (2002) he is 80 years old and lives near Portland, Oregon. With the help of our Senator here in Michigan he received his service medals only last year. rdvictor@webtv.net

+ ROAN, Charles H., PFC. 2nd Bn, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division. PFC Roan was a 21-year-old from Claude, Texas, who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. PFC Roan covered a grenade with his body, thereby saving the lives of his comrades on Peleliu, September 18, 1944.

ROBBINS, Val Jean ("Robbie"). Fought at Peleliu and Okinawa. Robbie passed away on November 18, 1997. He was born in Kansas and was a San Diego resident for 73 years. He is survived by his wife Bonnie, a son, 2 daughters, 3 step-children, 6 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He attended San Diego State University until WW II when he enlisted in the US Marine Corp and served his country for 4 years. He then returned to SDSU and earned his Master's degree in speech therapy which he taught in the San Diego City Schools for 32 years until his retirement.

ROBERTS, James R., Tech 5. Co. B, 819th Tank Destroyer Bn. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with Bronze Star. He served on Peleliu, Tarawa, Saipan, and Okinawa. He was from Madisonville, TN. He is now deceased.

ROBERTSON, Gene - 2nd Lt - B Co. Third Armored Amphibian Bn. - Now deceased.

ROBERTSON, James Edward, Platoon Sgt. 1st Marine Division. Served in the Marines Corps from September 25, 1940 until October 1, 1970 when he retired as Master Sergeant. Sgt. Robertson received the Silver Star Medal while serving in a Marine artillery battalion on Peleliu. On 3 October 1944, the battalion in which he was serving, acting as infantry, was holding a sector of the lines containing an enemy pocket of resistance. When a hospital corpsman, in attempting to reach a machine gun position to give aid to a wounded man, was hit and badly wounded by an enemy rifleman, Robertson, with complete disregard for his own safety, left his covered position, ran to the aid of the hospital corspman, and assisted him to cover within the machine gun position. His heroic action assisted in saving the life of a wounded comrade and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. James Edward Robertson is 82 years young and lives in Ormond Beach, FL. He was a "runner" and carried messages. His nephew, David Burton, was told that he was killed while carrying a message from one unit to another. * ROGERS, Fred W., PFC. Third Armored Amphibian Battalion. He was a radio operator repairman assigned to forward observer teams for the 155MM Howitzers and 155MM Long Tom. He was wounded in action on Bloody Nose Ridge the night of October 3, 1944. He was hit with Japanese hand grenade shrapnel and still has some in his body. You may send correspondence to Fred W. * ROGGE, Edward S., Jr., PFC. K-3-5. Sent to a military hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana to recuperate from the wound he received on Peleliu. After being discharged he resumed his pre-war position at the Standard Oil refinery in Baton Rouge, La. Edward married and he and his wife raised three children. He retired in 1985. Now deceased. ROLEN, Woodroe L., PFC 323 RCT, 81 Wildcat Division-now deceased. ROMERO, William J. - Cpl - D Co. Third Armored Amphibian Bn. + ROOKER, Dwight, PFC. Radio Operator with the forward observer teams in the 3rd Armored Amphibian Bn. He directed fire from the 155 MM Howitzers and 155 MM Long TOms, for the infantry. He was killed near the Airfield on the morning of D-Day + 1, September 16, 1944.

ROSENBERG, Sherwin L. - PFC - A Co. Sixth Amphibian Tractor Bn. ROSS, Bill D. Author of PELELIU: TRAGIC TRIUMPH. New York: Random House, Inc., 1991.

ROSS, Edward J. Cpl. First Marine Division. From Albany, NY. He enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was only 17, immediately after Pearl Harbor. He received the Silver Star while serving with the First Marine division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain island, on December 26 and 28, 1943. One of six men to follow a tank in an assault against an entrenched enemy pill box, Pvt. 1C Ross courageously braving a hail of immense hostile fire, crawled to the entrance of the emplacement on three separate occasions and threw in hand grenades, thereby completely neutralizing the Japanese position and clearing the way for further assaults. He risked his life again by effectively covering a patrol with an automatic rifle and through expert marksmanship killed several of the enemy. Edward Ross was 75 years old in 1999 and still lives in Albany, NY. ROSSMAN, Elmer Milo, Cpl. #451990. First Marine Division. Fought on Peleliu 9/15/44-9/18/44, Cape Gloucester 12/26/43- 3/1/44, and Okinawa 6/14/45-7/2/45. Elmer passed away August 1991. ROSZEL, James P., PFC. 1st Marines, 1st Battalion (1-1-1). He was in Pacific Theater Operations 11 July '44 thru 3 Feb '45 and was a BAR gunner. He was wounded in the elbow by shrapnel and evacuated. He was honorably discharged 9 Aug '45. He died of can in 1976. His son James Jr. is seeking further service information. ROUH, Carlton. Lt. A mortarman with 1-7. A 25-year-old from Lindenwold New Jersey. Nicknamed "Cobber". He was also awarded the Silver Star for heroism at Guadalcanal and the the Medal of Honor at Peleliu. Despite smothering a grenade with his body he survived the war. Now deceased.

RUTLEDGE, Paul R., Pvt. B Co. Third Armored Amphibian Bn. While on the LST on the way to Peleliu the tank crews drew straws to see who would stay on the LST to be used as replacements later. The tank he was assigned to hit a mine going in and there were no survivors. This has bothered my father all the years. He was used as a machine gunner after stripping the tanks of their usable guns on Bloody Nose Ridge. He was wounded on Okinawa and was treated by a corspman but he never received a Purple Heart for his wound. He enlisted in Seattle on 10/22/43, received basic training in Seattle, and took anti-tank training at Camp Elliott, CA. He was an anti-tank gun crewman. He shipped out on the SS Azalea City 3/28/44 to Noumea in 48th Replacement Bn. He joined the 52nd Replacement Bn on 5/29/44 and went to Russell Islands. He joined the Weapons Co. 5th Marines on 6/1/44 as an anti-tank Gun Specialist. He sailed from Pavuvu on LST 225 on 8/25 for Peleliu. After being shipped home on 11/11 on the Relief and recovering from leg amputation, he married Madeline in 1946, attended Seattle University, had four children, worked for Yale & Towne as a mechanical engineer, and died in PA on 2/1/64, before seeing his 11 grandchildren. He was a Corporal at discharge and has the Third Amphibious Corps patch on his dress jacket. His addresses during the war were (1) Battery B, 155 MM Gun Battalian and (2) 4th Defense Battalian. * SMITH, John Mitchel, Sgt. Born November 3, 1923, at Jasper, TX, John joined the USMC in 1942. He was serving in an artillery battery on Peleliu, and their gun emplacement was blown up, destroying the gun and killing and injuring its crew. John also served in Korea as a specialty Field Artillery Canoneer 0811, USMCR III, 8th MCRDist. He was a sergeant when discharged after Korea. He worked in oil company mapping until his retirement. He and his wife Gloria Ann have one daughter, who is now a physician.

Awarded U.S. Navy Photographic Institute citation on Oct. 27, 1945 for "exceptionally meritorious photography" for a motion picture sequence called "the Death of a U.S. Tank on Okinawa". * SPIELMANN, John V., Sgt. 81st Infantry, 321st, Company B on Anguar and then on Peleliu. He was wounded as a result of an enemy mortar shell exploding nearby as he led his platoon behind a tank. He received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. As of August 1999, John is 80 years young and currently residing in Lakewood, NJ.

* SPENCER, Robert E., Jr., 2nd Lt. 321st Infantry 81st Wildcat Division, U.S. Army. Wounded on Peleliu Sept. 28, 1944, and received the Silver Star for gallantry in action. He also served on Angar. Robert passed away January 26, 1999. Robert kept many artifacts of his involvement in WWII, letters, photos, Army documents. His family has donated some of the items to the Nimitz museum in Fredricksburg, Texas. This museum is dedicated to the Pacific theater. STEELE, Arnold E., Maj. MSC, USA (ret). Arnold was an FMF Navy Corpsman attached to a Marine Night Fighter squadron VMF(N)541 during the invasion of Peleliu. He helped to take care of Marines wounded on Peleliu, on the USS Tryon while awaiting transfer to the island. He was stationed 18 months on the coral rock then was sent to China where he was attached to the 2nd Bn, 1st Marines for 11 months quartered in Peking and Tientsin. He is now a member of the Monterey Bay Marine Corps League chapter 711. "I shall never forget the sacrifices of our nation's bravest and best on the island of Peleliu and I yet grieve for the many young men lost in this bloody conflict." STELCK, Del "Bill", Corporal. H-S Company, 1st Marines. The DUKH he was in got hit but he managed to make it ashore. His classification was Japanese combat interpretor (Regimental Intelligence). After a few days he was assigned to Col. Puller's headquarters. He was with the colonel down by the beach the last day there. Del is interested in finding Captain John Todd, CO of H-S Company. He lost his leg the first day on Peleliu. Some of his good friends from H-S were Keyes, Manhoff, Heyman, and Forrester. Del also fought at East New Guinea and New Britain. He and his wife Ruth have lived in Tallahassee, Florida, since 1957. He retired, at age 55 from the Bureau of Prisons, with a total of 33 years federal service. His son states that his Dad is his hero. "Not just because he fought as a proud Marine, but for the way he's lived his life as a man, a husband, and a father.
