GIBSON, Zed C., Army Transportation Corp. He drove a Duck, Taking troops ashore on the invasion, and ship-to-shore ammo and casualty transportation to the front lines during battle. He was from Arkansas.

GILES, Claude A., 1st Mar.Div, I Co.,3rd Bat., 1st reg. Landed in first wave on Peleliu and fought on Bloody Nose Ridge and the entire island until it was secured. Landed on Okinawa at the Naha Air Field on the first wave. Fought on the entire island from the North to the South and was wounded on this island. Then went to China for duty at Tietsin and Pieping. Was discharged in 1946. Address: Claude Giles P.O. Box 52 Belspring, VA 24058. Interested in finding a 1st Lt. who served in 1-3-1 on Peleliu during this same time. His last name is Smith. GLANKLER, Jr., Frank Joseph "Spook". 1st Marine Division, C-Company. By all accounts he was/is one of the only eight men left, who survived the battle for Bloody Nose Ridge from his company. He carried a flame thrower throughout all of his Division's island hopping campaigns in the Pacific. He lives in Memphis, TN and is regarded by many as the finest criminal trial lawyer known. * GLENN, Edison J. Marine. Also fought at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Britain, and Okinawa. Injured twise. He was one of 250 men in his landing, and one of 37 to survive. Edison lives in Eugene, OR.

GLENCROSS, Jack. K-3-1. During the battle of Peleliu Glencross was a BAR man. Jack was 17 a year old redhead that found himself being promoted to Cpl on the battlefield as a result of terrible losses to his company. After a month on Peleliu Jack was stationed in Ulithi until the end of the war. He also served as a sergeant in the Korean war. Jack is doing great, still living in Wallace Idaho. + GODFREY, Mike, PFC. Rifle Company, 1st Marine Division. Killed in action at Peleliu while trying to rescue a fellow marine. He was recommended for the Silver Star, but was awarded the Bronze Star. He attended San Pedro High School, San Pedro, California. He left school early to join the Marines.

GRANT, Howard T., Cpl. USMC, 1st Division. Family contact: He survived Peleliu without a scratch except for knocking out his front teeth on a coral rock while ducking a Jap nambu on the third day. GRAVING, William E. - PFC - A Co. Third Armored Amphibian Bn. - Now deceased.

+ GRAVITT, John, Lt. 1st Marine Division. Lt. Gravitt was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions. He held off a jap machine gun net while while his comrades were able to move to cover. He sustained what proved to be mortal wounds and died in a field hospital around September 22. If you knew Lt. John Gravitt, please contact his sister Joanna and nephew Mark Langwell a breadman@tca.net . Two of John Gravitt's brothers also served in the South Pacific during WW II. His brother Wilbur was in the Army Air Corps and was killed in a plane crash in Hawaii in 1942. His brother Floyd was captured at Corregidor and he survived the Bataan death march and a Japanese prison camp. Floyd is alive and well in Florida.

+ GREER, Ron, 2nd Bn, 5th Marines, 1st Division. Ron was from Boston Massachusetts. He was a very unusual and effective leader in the second battalion. "His Irish wit and brilliance made him an usual person in the planning and implementing of the stagings for landing of the 2nd Division at Peleliu. Ron was hit by a piece of Jap mortar shrapnel within 60 seconds of his landing on the coral sand beach of Peleliu and he died in the next few hours as we were urged by him to go ahead, take charge, do what we came to do. The end for Ron came early, and yet his attitude and skill of leadership gave a meaning to why the rest of us were there and provided motivation for some of us to do better and strive to be effective fighting Marines." Attached to the 81st Infantry, Wildcat Division, 906th Field Artillery Battalion C Battery, He fought in the Palau Group and Southern Philippines Campaigns from 16 July 1944 through December 26, 1945, and received the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and Philippines Liberation Ribbon. He passed away in July 1996.

+ HALDANE, Andrew Allison "Ack-Ack". Served with the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal and was commanding officer of Company K at Cape Gloucester, where he won the Silver Star. He led Company K through most of the fight for Peleliu. On October 12, 1944, three days before the Marines came off the lines, he died in action. Capt. Haldane was born in 1917 in Lawrence, MA. He graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME, where the memory of Captain Haldane is honored annually by presenting the Haldane Cup to the graduating senior who has displayed outstanding qualities of leadership and character.

HALE, Ernest M. - 2nd Lt - A Co. Third Armored Amphibian Bn.

* HALKET, Guil. In Captain Pope's Charlie Co, 1st Bn, 1st Marines. Was hit on the coral ridge for which heroism Captain Pope received the Medal of Honor. Guil was evacuated on a hospital ship that ran aground after midnight about a day out of Pelelieu which flooded several forward compartments (crew's quarters) and the ship was compelled to make way at 1 1/2 knots astern for fear of collapsing inner bulkheads. It took about 5 days to get to Banika. After a month in the Naval Hospital he rejoined Charlie Company at Pavuvu. Guil may be reached by email guilhalket@zianet.com

+HESSELBARTH, Otto, T/4 - 1st Platoon, A Company, 710th Tank Battalion, 81st Inf. Div. - One of four tank crewmen who, along with Capt. H.W. Jones of the 7th Marine Regiment, were killed on Oct. 18, 1944 when their Sherman hit a mine or unexploded shell on Hill 210, Bloody Nose Ridge while directing fire at enemy caves. To this day, the tank lies in place where it was hit. On Sept. 15, 2000, a memorial plaque embossed with the names of T/4 Hesselbarth and his fellow crewmen was dedicated at the tank site.

As the men were advancing Arnold was standing as lookout at a machine gun position. He was shot through the chest by a Jap rifleman. Six months after Arnold was killed his brother James was KIA in the Battle of the Bulge.

+ HILL, Morse G. "Glen", Pvt. USMC. Glen died on the first day his forces landed in the Palaui Islands, September 15, 1944. His father received three Division/Unit awards posthumously, the Presidential Unit Citation, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and the Victory Medal World War II. He was born in Prosser, WA in 1924 and graduated from Prosser High School in June of 1943. He joined the USMC late in 1943, and remained an additional 2 weeks after finishing boot camp as he had never learned to swim. He was the sixth of 8 children.

JAIMES, Joe P. - PFC - C Co. Third Armored Amphibian Bn.

* JAMES, Forrest G., Cpl. 1st Bn, 7th Marines. Wounded on the assault on the beach on September 15th. Mortar went off in his amtrack about 2 feet from him, and he received about 200 pieces of shrapnel to his body, including one in his left eye. He died in 1985 in North Mankato, MN, of an abdominal aneurism which could have been a belated result of war wounds since they only removed six pieces of the shrapnel and as he got older it started to move around. Forrest was married in Detroit to Geneview Wilkie in February of 1945 after meeting her in person for only a few days. He was a veteran of Cape Gloucester and was written up as a hero in the associated press for holding off Japanese fire while two of his comrades went to rescue their fallen sergeant. The sergeant was dead, but they returned with his body. Forrest was known as "Cowboy" because of his bowed legs or "Hap" which was short for Happy because he was always smiling. He and the wounded Marine were killed by machine gun fire.

JORGENSEN, George E., Pvt. 1st Division, 7th and 11th Marines. Fought at Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa. George weighed 135 lbs., yet did lots of duty with the BAR and Flamethrower.
