NEWBERRY, Lyle W., PhM 2/c, USN, Corpsman, Hq. Co. and 1st plt. George Co. 2nd Bn. 5th Marines. Landed on Peleliu 15 Sept. 1944 and served throughout the entire campaign. Deceased 1982.

NEWLAND, Glen c. - Pvt - C Co. Third Armored Amphibian Bn.

NEWTON, Robert James, Staff SGT, USMC, Artillary Communications Unit, First Marine Division. Served in combat on Guadalcanal, New Guinea, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu. Graduated from Pomona College. Masters Degree from University of Redlands. School teacher and Principal for Covina School District in California. Deceased December 4, 1999. His family may be reached by email: cjnewton@jps.net

NICHOLS, Robert L., PFC. Participated in the seizure by assault of Beachhead on Peleliu, September 15, 1944. He received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in this battle and received an honorable Discharge on June 19, 1945 due to these injuries. He passed away on July 6, 1991. NICKELL Jr., James W. 1st Marine Division, 7th Marine Regiment. L Company, 3rd Battalion, wounded October 4, 1944 in the hip and got home on Dec. 5th, 1944 to San Diego Naval Hospital for a month. Then he went up to Hunter's Point in San Francisco. He now lives in California with his wife Katie.

NORCOTT, Lewis H., Lt. Cdr., USNR. Fought at Peleliu in VPB-54. He was a navigator in a PBY-5A Catalina flying boat and flew rescue missions as well as bombing runs. His part of the squadron was based in Palau. His pilot during the air campaign over Peleliu was Lt. John Love. Lewis had 23 rescues to his credit and received the air medal and a number of other decorations during the campaign. There were many, many Marine pilots rescued by the crews of VPB-54, one of the "Black Cat" squadrons. He also did some flying with Marine Corps pilots in other aircraft in Palau. He used to eat all his meals with the Marines and sometimes a sniper would pick guys off while they were waiting for Chow. Lewis passed away in 1984. He was a member of the Bloody Nose Ridge Masonic lodge and his family still has his membership card. * ONKST, Harold E., Sgt. Army. Landed on Peleliu to support and relieve the Marines who received heavy casualties. He was wounded in the left knee and suffered for years until he received a new one in 1997. After getting out of the Army he managed a grocery store in Harlan. In 1957 he started a Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store in Corbin, KY. This business grew to expand into surrounding communities. He sold all the stores and semi-retired in 1994. OVERBAY, Thomas Jesse. Jesse was living at Chilhowie, VA when drafted into the Army. He was a member of the 81st Infantry Division, 321st Infantry Regiment, Company H. He served in heavy weapons and operated a Browning machine gun. He made the invasion of Anguar and fought on Peleliu and went to Japan for the occupation. As of 2002, he is 76 years old and resides in Glad Spring, VA. He says he would be glad to correspond with fellow veterans and provide information for relatives of the men in his company. PLAUCHE, Godwin. Marine. From Sulphur, Louisiana. Godwin now has Alzheimer's, but his family recalls that he grew up in Sulphur, Louisiana and enjoyed hunting. He was known as a very good shot and would often be assigned to go up in a tree to snipe Japanese. He often talked about a "great big Indian from Oklahoma" who was in his platoon who he obviously was very close to but could never find after the war. Godwin had actually traveled from Louisiana to Oklahoma looking for him but never found him. If you should have information about Godwin, his family would appreciate hearing from you. Mike died in 1966 and his best buddy Joseph Kranick, from Olyphant, PA, died on Peleliu. * PRICE, John Edward, PFC. U.S. Marine Corp. Reserve. He was called "Jack" or "Arky" because of his thick southern accent. Was on the assault wave at Peleliu. He was assigned to Company G, 2nd Bn, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry on a hilltop in the vicinity of Bloody Nose Ridge on Sept. 19, 1944. He was also wounded with mortar shrapnel during the action but was returned to his unit on Oct. 3, 1944. He fought again later at Okinawa where he was wounded twice in May 1945. He went to his grave on May 20, 1972 with inoperable Japanese shrapnel in his chest and a Japanese bullet behind his knee. He also suffered periodically from bouts of malaria. PULLER, Lewis B., Col., Commanding Officer of the 1st Marines. "Chesty" was awarded the Navy Cross five times during his illustrous career. A book was written about him: Davis, Burke. MARINE!: Boston. Little, Brown and Company, 1962. Puller died 10-11-71 in Saluda, Virginia.
