KASSOUF, JOHN, PFC. 1st Signal Company, 1st Marine Division. Landed on Peleliu on D-Day morning, September 15, 1944, and fought the Japanese until relieved by the Army 81st Division, about a month later. (Deceased about 1981, Kinston NC).

* KINCAID, John Oliver Jr., Sergeant. On the night of Sept. 17, 1944, Sgt. Kincaid, a veteran of Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester fighting, and a squad leader with 1st Platoon, Company E, 2nd Bn, 1st Marine Regiment, volunteered to help his platoon leader defend a rocky pinnacle known as Hill 200 on the company's extreme left flank. Attacked repeatedly throughout the night, they killed more than 40 Japanese. Kincaid was wounded in hand-to-hand fighting but refused to be evacuated until ordered. He was later awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart. John lived in Montana after the war. He passed away in May of 1999. You can read about some of John's experience in a chapter about Peleliu from BROTHERS IN BATTLE, written by USMCR Capt. R. Bruce Watkins (John's Platoon Leader). John's actions on Hill 200 forced the Japanese to relocate their headquarters on the island.

KOEHLER, Jack. An FMF Navy corpsman from Denver, Colorado. Was attached to the First Marine Division during the invasion of Peleliu. Jack died in the 1970's leaving a lovely wife and two pretty teenage daughters. His boot camp was at Farragut, Idaho and he attended the Hospital Corps School. KOTARSKI, Joseph C., was in an armored amphibian Bn. During Peleliu. He also served on Guadacanal, Gloucester, and Okinawa. He later was Sent to Korea. He was a career Marine and had already retired when Vietnam came along. He volunteered to got here, even though he was already retired and in a civilian job. He was 43 years old at the time. He felt, "They needed me." Gy Sgt. Kotarski died January 8, 1992. He suffered a long and cruel illness, as a victim of Agent Orange. We never heard one word of complaint and he died as he lived. Always Faithful, and always brave. Joe was one of the many valiant souls that answered the call when the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. Family contact: JeanetteK5@aol.com

* KOVAR, Leonard, Cpl. Company L, 7th Regiment, 1st Marines. Wounded attempting to knock out MG emplacement on Bloody Nose Ridge with bazooka, knocked out one only to be fired upon by a second nest. In his green Marine book entitled "The Old Breed" he has written served: Cape Glouster, Dec 20, 1943 to April 24, 1944, New Guinea, Oct. 19, 1943 to Dec. 30, 1943, Peleliu, Sept. 15, 1944 to Oct 4, 1944, Okinawa (Hill 81). + KRAUS, Richard E., Private First Class, Eigth Amphibian Tractor Battalion, Third Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force. Received the Medal of Honor posthumously for conspicious gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu on October 3, 1944. Private Kraus flung himself upon a grenade to save the lives of three of his companions. PVC Kraus was born in Chicago, IL, but was from Minneapolis, MN at the time of his death.

He participated in action against the enemy at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, Eastern New Guinea Operation, Bismarck Archipelago Operation, and Peleliu, where he was killed on Oct.1, 1944. He was awarded the Navy Cross, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation ribbon bar with two stars, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. The Navy Cross was presented to his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Lasco, by Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestall, in honor of Donald Lasco, who single-handedly charged a Jap gun position and was fatally wounded during his heroic action. + LAZARO, Michael A., Pvt. 1st Pioneer Bn, 1st Marine Division. Killed in action on Bloody Nose Ridge on October 14, 1944. No body was recovered. His nephew George Thomas know that a PFC Samuel Himsey with Company L, 3rd Bn, 5th marines witnessed his uncle being shot by a sniper. The bullet hit a phosphorous grenade hanging from his uncle's belt and it exploded killing his uncle. George has not been able to locate Mr. Himsey. LEET, Wilfred P. Sea Bees 571, September 15, 1944 - November 1945. His unit built airstrips with coral mines, roads, installations, bridges, etc. He built the cemetery for those killed in action. Marines would visit for a cold drink of water. He was a stevedore unloading ships of various nations, including Russians, English, Aussies, as well as U.S. He lives in Venice, Florida. + LOPES, George, PFC - 1st Platoon, A Company, 710th Tank Battalion, 81st Inf. Div. - One of four tank crewmen who, along with Capt. H.W. Jones of the 7th Marine Regiment, were killed on Oct. 18, 1944 when their Sherman hit a mine or unexploded shell on Hill 210, Bloody Nose Ridge while directing fire at enemy caves. To this day, the tank lies in place where it was hit. On Sept. 15, 2000, a memorial plaque embossed with the names of PFC Lopes and his fellow crewmen was dedicated at the tank site.

In 1943 he underwent Tank Training in Oro Bay, New Guinea and in Ballarat, Australia. He was in the amphibious landing at Cape Gloucester, New Britain on Dec 26,1943, the landing at Tahnamerah,Dutch New Guinea on Apr.22,1944, and the landing at Peleliu on Sep.15,1944. Survived one month of fierce combat there. Was shell loader in tank #9; also carried a backpack radio. He left Peleliu on 10/20/44, and was honorably discharged on 11/28/45. He received 80% disability from major machine gun injuries to his arms and legs. They had to shorten one leg by an inch after the incident. Bob became a rather successful amateur golfer in Oregon in the 50's and 60's and was the official Gold Historian for the Oregon Golf Association until his death on October 22, 1999. MILLER, JOSEPH A., Army, RCT 321st Battalion. Tech Sgt. Miller, while exposed to enemy fire, covered the withdrawal of his company from an overrun ridge position, then carried down a wounded soldier. He later assaulted the same ridge single-handedly and held it for twenty hours, killing twenty Japanese soldiers. He was awarded a spot commission of Second Lieutenant.

Was recommended for the Silver Star after Peleliu. Transferred to the 7th Marines following Peleliu. He was sent home due to wounds received at Peleliu. He was killed in an automobile accident in 1947. Information submitted by his grandson, Woodrow Freeze.

MOSIER, Robert Earl. Served as a Surgical Technician (Tech 5). He served in the 306th Co B Med. Bn. and also the 81st Inf. Div. (Wildcats). He saw action at Anguar Island and Peleliu. He was also at Kayangel Village. He enlisted July 13, 1943 and served his country until January 24, 1946. He was on the U.S.S. Republic and the U.S.S. St. Louis. He was at Admiralty Islands, Marshall Islands, Midway Islands, Solomon Islands, Loyalty Islands and many other locations throughout the Western Pacific. He was wounded in action when the jeep he was riding in ran over a land mine while enroute to assist wounded comrades. He received many Ribbons and Medals. + MURPHY, William Francis, Capt., was killed in action on Peleliu, Bloody Nose Ridge, September 28, 1944. He was acting Regimental Planning Officer for the 321st Infantry when he volunteered to lead Rifle Co K. Maneuvering through the ridge line Co K lost contact with the units to either side. Captain Murphy and a Rifleman (named Reynolds) attempted to locate the adjacent friendly forces and were killed. Captain Murphy was awarded the Silver Star and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. MURRAY, Raymond W. Sr., PFC. 81MM Mortar Operator of the 2nd Bn, 7th Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was from Elma, NY, a suburb of Buffalo. He went on to battle at Okinawa was wounded in action 6/6/45 and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Ray passed away on Easter Sunday 4/23/2000 and was laid to rest in Holland Cemetery, Holland, New York on 4/27/2000. He was given a full military honors funeral by the United States Marines and the and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Ray was a proud member of The 1st Marine Division Association and met annually with the 2nd BN 7th Marines Association. His son John J.
