My Sewing Book

This sewing book, inspired by Anne of Green Gables, holds everything Anne might have needed for mending or to work a sampler.  Its four, two-sided pages have a pocket envelope for her carded needles, a fabric pincushion, a page with wool to store her pins, a quilted pocket to hold her thread winder, a pocket to hold a miniature notebook/journal and her practice sampler page.

I chose the color palette to suggest the beautiful verdant landscape, the ever changing ocean color and the rich red earth of Prince Edward Island.

The piece is worked on 32-ct linen and includes some over-1 and over-2 stitching and 21 specialty stitches.  There is a small amount of sewing to make the pockets and pincushion which can be done by hand or with a machine.  The finishing of the pages is straightforward and easy to accomplish using the step-by-step instructions.

Ed Miller of Miller Carpentry designed a thread winder exclusively for “My Sewing Book”.  Each one is individually made by Ed from maple wood, hand rubbed to a smooth finish then signed and dated. The thread winder is stored in the pocket of this page.

This page features a sweet over-two mini sampler.

I will be designing an exclusive accessory just for this retreat that will include many of the specialty stitches used in the book as well as the finishing technique used.   You can work on this during class so that you'll have a good working knowledge of all the aspects of the design making stitching it at home easier or, if you rather, jump right into the book.

Note for Students: Students should have previous experience working on linen or linen-like fabrics and should be comfortable working from basic stitching diagrams and cross stitch charts. Students will need their favorite stitching tools or basic sewing kit (sharp scissors, ruler or tape measurer, writing utensil, extra needles, a hoop or Q-Snaps, etc.). If needed, students will need to provide their own additional lighting or magnification (if bringing "plug-ins", please bring an extension cord).
